Five Questions with Brent Warr

Brent Warr took office as mayor of Gulfport earlier this month.  Warr’s impressive victory on the first day of a crowded Republican primary signals he’s an up-and-comer in Mississippi politics.

Warr and his wife Laura have two children.  Prior to becoming mayor, Warr owned and operated Warr’s Men’s Clothing Store in Gulfport.  He was a founding member of the Coast Community Bank, where he served as Vice Chairman.  He has a B.A. degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.

How do you believe you were able to win a crowded primary without a runoff?
We had the best team. We had the best political consultants and an army of the best volunteers and supporters. We were organized and determined. On top of that, the voters wanted positive change. Our campaign represented that change.

What will be your most important priority as mayor?
A top priority as mayor will be to help create a sound financial base for the city's economy. Because of projected growth, infrastructure improvements are vital and wise spending will be vital to accomplish those improvements. My very highest priority is a desirable quality of life for all of the residents of Gulfport.

Who are your role models?
My role models are my parents, Kay and Gene Warr, and my Uncle Al Warr of Texas. My parents taught me about commitment and how to work. My Uncle Al was a great communicator, a humorist and someone who taught me about persistence in business.

Which elected officials do you admire most?
I admire Jimmy Carter, the Great Humanitarian. I admire State Supreme Court Justice Jess Dickinson, whose integrity and friendship I value. Additionally, Ronald Reagan, whom I would like to have met and Rudolph Giuliani, who I did meet and whose book Leadership has offered inspiration for a new mayor.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like working with my hands and restoration. One project that I recently completed was the restoration of a 1973 Toyota Land Cruiser. My son and I had a ball working on it. I am also at the end of a two year restoration project of an older home in Gulfport. We have spent a great deal of time as a family working on the house.
