Jackson group voices opposition to possible airport takeover
Bill suggests state takeover
A coalition of Jackson leaders and business owners is fighting a bill to transfer control of the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport to a state appointed-board.
Senate Bill 2162, authored by State Sen. Josh Harkins, a Flowood Republican, would replace the five-member Jackson Municipal Airport Authority with a nine-member Jackson Metropolitan Airport Authority. It gives Gov. Phil Bryant five appointments and Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber only one. Yarber names all five current board members.
Members of the Coalition for Economic Justice called for "no compromise" at a Tuesday news conference, arguing the bill takes power from the city of Jackson and allows neighboring counties to benefit from city investments.
Harkins said the bill gives representation to other interested groups, including the Mississippi National Guard, without taking revenue from the city.
