Gallo's Morning Diatribe for March 28, 2002

"Things WE like"

"Is there ANYTHING that you actually LIKE?" That statement came from co-hosts Connie and Farley on a recent show. It is a question all liberals ask conservatives at least once per week. Trouble is, when you talk about the hottest topics in the news, most of them are BAD. But, nevertheless, the statement did get me to thinking. Growing up on a Mississippi Delta farm has a way of seeding conservative roots deep in the bosom of the soul. What makes me (and other MISSISSIPPI conservatives) so obnoxious to liberals is that we are not afraid to state our pride in that conservative ideology.

On a farm, the land itself teaches you the direct relationship between labor and harvest. Conservatism meant holding on to values that were patriotic, morality that was spiritual and a lifestyle that was family oriented. Today, when it comes to values, morality and lifestyle, I'm afraid they are nothing more than faded remnants of an old fashion, out-dated ideology. The fact is, we are baby boomers who are not THAT old, but sometimes we honestly feel we should have been born during an earlier era.

Taking liberty with the collective mindset of our audience, let me answer the question, "Is there anything WE like?" We like patriotism that is honest and real. We understand that REAL patriotism doesn't fade away when the urgent bulletins do on the evening newscast. We like our heroes homegrown and not pre-fabricated on the silver screen. We understand that real heroes come from old faded photos of GI's in family albums, from firefighters, police department, school rooms and yes, even churches. We like to see people putting politics and political correctness aside when it comes to what is really best for a child.

We like to stand up and fight when common decency and common sense are assaulted by the media elite. We like comedians who make us laugh without leaning on four letter words, bodily functions, ridiculing parents or degrading a person's faith. Call us silly. We like leaving a good movie with a good message and not feeling as though we are covered in a film of filth. We like to see young adults stand up for family, faith and American values. Yes, we like baseball, ice cream and apple pie, not because they are American institutions but WHY they are American institutions. You see, we understand the framework of these American institutions are built on the foundation of freedom and family. We like people who know the miracle of Jesus was in multiplying fish not tofu. We understand the different between harvesting wildlife and slaughtering wildlife. We like discipline at home and in the schools. We have absolutely no problem whatsoever understanding the difference between a spanking and a beating.

We like to say "Yes Sir and No Sir" to anyone who may even appear to be older than we are. We understand our respectfulness it is a direct reflection on the job our parents did. We like it when a handshake is better than a contract and a car full of lawyers. We understand than in the end truth is great equalizer. We like messages on bumper stickers and t-shirts that garner the approval of our grandparents without hesitation. We like to see due process done in punishing the guilty, not the innocent. We understand the damage done to the fabric of our legal system by liberal judges who suffer "reasoning deficiency" in the interpretation of Constitutional rights.

We are a boring lot, aren't we? In text we appear to be mere Puritans. We frown on burning the flag, dancing naked in the street, bingeing till regurgitation, allowing pornography in libraries, homosexuality in the military and stupidity in legislation. My, my, where do WE go when it is time to party? All that being said, isn't it strange that the things WE like are things that PROMOTE a better world? It's not by accident you know? The manuscript we follow comes from writings recorded many, many years ago in a very Good Book...and WE like that too!
