Mississippi's State Senator William G. Hewes III Concludes Dynamic Term as ALEC National Chairman
Mississippi Senator Leaves Behind Outstanding Legacy

(Washington, DC) - In a ceremonial 'passing of the gavel' at ALEC's States & Nation Policy Summit, Mississippi State Senator Billy Hewes stepped down as the American Legislative Exchange Council's National Chairman for 2004.   Replacing him for 2005 will be Georgia Representative Earl Ehrhart, a long time ALEC member and 2004 First Vice Chairman.

The American Legislative Exchange Council is the nation's largest nonpartisan individual membership association of state legislators and is dedicated to developing public policies based on the Jeffersonian principles of free markets, limited government, federalism, and individual liberty. As the 2004 ALEC National Chairman, Senator Hewes was responsible for setting the policies and priorities for the 2,400-member association of state legislators.

During his term as National Chairman, Senator Hewes guided ALEC through one of its most productive years to date.  In 2004 ALEC increased its overall membership and saw 45 new private sector members join in the outstanding public-private partnership that ALEC has strived to become. ALEC now includes over 90 members of congress, more than 100 state legislative leaders and 6 sitting governors.

"I have been deeply honored to serve ALEC as its National Chairman for 2004," said Senator Hewes. "I am extremely proud that we have brought ALEC to the next level by affirming our position as the leading nonpartisan conservative state policy voice in America.  ALEC is re-focused on our commitment to conservative ideals, inspired vision and principled policies."

"Chairman Hewes' term was extremely productive," said Duane Parde, Executive Director of ALEC. "We are once again on the right track and this last year, under Senator Hewes' leadership, we were able to make an aggressive leap towards becoming a more nationally recognized organization."

The 2,400-member organization thanks Senator Hewes for his time and leadership over the last year.   His dedication to Jeffersonian principles and conservative ideals has made him the great leader he is.
